Egyptian culture emphasizes the importance of family. The basic social unit in the culture is the nuclear family. Extended family is also very important, though in recent years the role of extended family has begun to decrease. This has especially shown true in Egyptian American families, as distance among extended families has played a large role in the decrease of importance. Family structure among Egyptian Americans has also changed as a result of marriages between Egyptian immigrants and Americans. Egyptian men marrying American women has become a prominent trend.
