Waves of Immigration: Egypt to America
Large waves of immigration by Egyptians to the United States is recent, with much of the immigration occurring in the later part of the 20th century. Other Arab countries had large waves of immigration to the United States in the mid-19th century, but there was not significant immigration by Egyptians until the following century. The main reasons for immigration are economic or education based. All religious groups found in Egypt, Christian, Muslim, and Jewish, have also immigrated due to the unrest in the Middle East. Between 1967 and 1977, about 15,000 Egyptians immigrated to America. Over the past decades, the United States is not the only country to see significant Egyptian immigration. Canada, Australia, Europe, and Gulf Arab nations have seen an increase in Egyptian immigration as well.
The first Egyptians to immigrate to America were educated professionals and skilled workers. The 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act helped boost this immigration, as certain professionals were welcomed into the country.
